Celebrate Women's History Month with this presentation by Dr. Maucione that compares two feminist novels.
Gonzaga's Dr. Maucione argues literary texts that imagine anti- or post-capitalist spaces are important not only in preparing readers to enter them, but in making them possible. She juxtaposes near-future-set novels, Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West and Louise Erdrich’s The Future Home of the Living God, in order to explore the sociopolitical significance of the anti-capitalist futures they manifest. No need to read the books ahead of time!
Erdrich is an Indigenous woman writer, whose novel focuses on women as targets of exploitation and commoditization as well as the sources of hope for a better future, while Hamid’s novel is feminist in that it imagines a female protagonist who is better equipped to embrace change and the future itself because as a woman in a patriarchal society, she is not attached to the status quo in the ways that her male counterpart is.
Jessica Maucione, Ph.D., is Professor of English and Women's & Gender Studies and Powers Chair of the Humanities at Gonzaga University.
