How to Write Nature Poems with Deeper Meaning

This Inland Northwest Poetry Salon workshop expands on the practice of writing nature poems.

What makes a “nature poem” resonate beyond solely environmental themes? This workshop will delve into the ways that poets invoke the physical world to investigate social, political, and emotional landscapes, particularly in the American West. The workshop will survey work from poets such as Erin Block, Camille Dungy, Velimir Khlebnikov, Carl Phillips, Joe Wilkins, and others, as well as engage in generative exercises that push “eco-writing” into the unmapped territories of the heart.

About the presenter: Sage Marshall is a poet, essayist, and outdoor journalist from southwest Colorado. He has lived across the U.S. and currently resides in Western Montana, where he explores the rivers and mountains around Missoula with his partner Bela and their adopted bird dog Gunney. He’s a student of many outdoor pursuits, from skiing and backpacking to fly fishing and duck hunting. Marshall is a contributing writer and former editor of Field & Stream. His creative work has been featured in publications such as The Missouri Review, Sport Literate, swamp pink, and elsewhere. 'Echolocation' is his debut poetry collection.
