Experimenting Across Genres

This is a multi-genre (both prose and poetry) critiquing six-week workshop led by graduates of Eastern Washington University's MFA program.

A free weekly writing workshop that provides space for you, the writer, to develop your practice. In our cross-genre approach, we will examine multiple modes of writing that involve poetry and prose, or are a hybrid of both! This workshop is open to all levels and methods of writing, and aims to create an inclusive and productive environment for everyone who is interested.

During our six meetings, participants can expect to generate work, share work, and learn how to critique the work of others (by published authors and their own peers). Our discussions will touch on various craft techniques in an effort to understand what makes writing compelling, and explore ways to implement those strategies in our own work.

Additionally, this workshop will champion the short forms of each genre. We will focus on concision, highlight what is essential in the language, and model our processes on professional examples. Readings will be provided by the instructors and will include writers such as: Ada Limon, Amy Hempel, Major Jackson, Maggie Nelson, Joan Didion, and Carmen Maria Machado. 

Participants are expected to attend all six sessions.

Bios:

Annalee Fairley is a writer living in Spokane, Washington. She is the former nonfiction editor of Willow Springs magazine. Her most recent publications have been in Wild Roof Journal, 3Elements Review, and Poetry South. Her work has been nominated for the AWP Intro Award, a Pushcart Prize, and Best New Poets.

Jeff Thomas is a poet from The Thumb. A graduate of Eastern Washington University’s MFA program, Thomas is a former poetry editor of Willow Springs magazine. His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Southeast Review, The Glacier, Slipstream, and elsewhere.

Brian Lynch is writer from New York, living in Washington State. He is the former fiction editor of Willow Springs magazine. Recent work has appeared in Peatsmoke and Inkfish and been nominated for multiple awards.
