A fairytale-inspired writing workshop for adults.
Our Writing Education Specialist, local novelist Sharma Shields, has been a longtime fan of fairy tales. From classics like “Wild Swans” and “The Moon Child” to modern retellings like Pan’s Labyrinth and Boy, Snow, Bird, Sharma delights again and again in the tone, style, and magic of timeless tales. Over the course of twelve months, Sharma will introduce several short stories and writing prompts designed to help you write your own imaginative stories. Writers will examine what makes fairy tales so alluring and metaphorical while also subverting more notorious fairytale notions such as purity, gender binaries, and happy endings. In our second meeting, Sharma will discuss “The Huntress” by Sofia Samatar, Hans Christian Andersen’s “Thumbelina,” and the Phoebe Wahl picture book Little Witch Hazel. Bring your writing instrument of choice—there will be a fun writing prompt or two in every Fairytale Forest session.
You do not need to have attended the previous Fairytale Forest workshop to attend this one.
