The author and illustrator of the picture book 'Kid and the Nothing-to-Do Year' discuss their work and how to publish stories set in Spokane. This event is part of the Lilac City Book Festival.
Heartfelt stories with a home-based setting can connect readers of all ages through shared experiences, as well as build family and community belonging. In this Lilac City Book Festival event, author Megan Young and illustrator Murakami discuss their process in creating and publishing their celebrated picture book, Kid and the Nothing-to-Do Year.
The Lilac City Book Festival is a yearly event to support local writers and illustrators of books for children and teenagers. It's organized by Spokane Public Library and presented in partnership with the local chapter of the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).
About the presenters:
Born and raised in Spokane, Megan's passions all came full circle after becoming a mom. Stories, teaching, history, and adventure all melded into one with the hope of sharing more of home with her kids. From national historic site interpreter to local museum educator, from pedagogy trainer to stay-at-home mom, all roles expanded her awareness and now she's found a new way to share her joy and passion. Melissa is a PNW-based illustrator and story artist with a passion for bringing out the kid in everyone. From a young age, she was drawn to stories and creating characters through art. It was tough to find a notebook page or homework sheet without some kind of doodle on it. Melissa grew her skills as a proud graduate of Whitworth University. She went on to receive her MFA in Digital Arts and continues to grow and learn every day.
