Get inspired by finding poetry in surprising places, such as TikTok videos, song lyrics, and visual art. This workshop is part of the third annual Inland Northwest Poetry Salon.
This workshop will introduce writers to the genre of ekphrastic poetry, and then push the limits of what ekphrastic poetry can be. Traditionally, ekphrastic poetry has been used to categorize poems that describe (or are inspired by) works of visual art. However, in the digital age, this definition can be expanded to include poems inspired by art from other mediums, such as songs, television shows, and even video games. TikTok edits, which draw from the Ekphrastic tradition, will briefly be discussed because they perform a fundamental function of poetry, which is to place unexpected images together to create work that is fresh and beautiful. A key takeaway from this workshop is that a work of art can serve as a “moderator” between us and our emotions, which is helpful when we, as writers, feel so uninspired that we can’t pull raw material from our personal lives, or when our feelings about our personal lives are so intense they threaten to push us into abstraction or cliché. Workshoppers will respond to writing prompts that help them create a link between their favorite artworks and their personal memories.
