An awe-inspiring and hope-inducing presentation about gay and lesbian adoption rights in Washington State and beyond.
In 1986, Lisa and her partner Lynn had a baby using donor insemination. But equal rights to legally parent their child were not guaranteed for Lynn, since she was not the biological mother.
Hear the story directly from these two inspiring women of how, following a two-year court battle, they secured parenting rights for themselves and for all other same-sex couples in Washington State. Discover their journey from changing the law not just regionally but also in Washington D.C., and how they’ve continued the fight for equal rights for LGBTQ+ people to the present day.
This is a Humanities WA Speakers Bureau event.
About the presenters: Lynn Grotsky and Lisa Brodoff have been in a committed lesbian relationship for 44 years. Lisa is an emerita professor of law at Seattle University. She specializes in elder and disability law and has actively worked on expanding the rights of LGBTQ+ people for over 40 years. Lynn is a retired Clinical Social Worker who worked in private practice, and is also the co-founder and first director of Pizza Klatch, a nonprofit organization providing school lunchtime support groups for LGBTQ+ youth.
Lynn and Lisa live in Lacey.
