Local author Lauren R. Harris shares research and writing tips for creating engaging, accurate historical and biographical nonfiction books for children.
As a former teacher, journalist, and homeschool mom, she has authored three nonfiction picture books, including her newest, Bing Himself: The Story of Bing Crosby, The World’s First Multimedia Star (2025). Her earlier works became a WWA Spur Award Finalist, were selected for the Library of Congress Great Reads from Great Places, and were featured in Spokane’s Story Walk. Lauren lives in Spokane with her husband and three children.

The Lilac City Book Festival is a yearly event to support local writers and illustrators of books for children and teenagers. It's organized by Spokane Public Library and presented in partnership with the local chapter of the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).
