Dr. Katrina Jagodinsky will discuss Spokane's rich habeas history in the context of her larger project, Petitioning for Freedom: Habeas Corpus in the American West, 1812-1924. Based on unpublished court records from county, state, and federal courts in Washington and a handful of other Western states, this presentation features the cases of marginalized and colorful characters whose creative legal claims shaped American understandings of civil rights and due process.
