Join us in remembering the 80th year since the nuclear bombing of Japan with a reading of "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr. After the reading, learn how to make origami cranes.
Based on a true story, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes tells the moving story of Sadako Sasaki and her brave struggle against leukemia (the “atom-bomb disease") which she contracted in 1955 when she was twelve (just ten years after the bomb was dropped). Inspired by a Japanese legend that a sick person who folds 1,000 paper cranes will be granted a wish, Sadako embarks on a mission to fold the cranes, hoping to be cured. The story highlights themes of hope, peace, and the devastating effects of war.
After the book reading and discussion, learn how to make origami cranes. All ages welcome.
