Learn about PFAS, aka “forever chemicals” found in outdoor gear, cosmetics, and more—and understand their impact on health and the environment, with insights from Colorado outdoorsman Steven Smith.
PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of chemicals used to make outdoor gear waterproof and stain-resistant. These "forever chemicals" have been linked to health and environmental concerns. Ski wax, fishing line, waterproof mascara, Teflon pans, and Stainmaster carpet are other places where PFAS is a key ingredient.
Steven Smith is a well-known outdoorsman and blogger from Boulder, Colorado. He hiked uphill from Denver to test for PFAS in mountaintop water, after his own PFAS lab test on a jacket. In tonight's talk, he shares his findings and what you can do to minimize the risk these chemicals pose to your health. This is a presentation by the West Plains Water Coalition.
The West Plains Water Coalition is a local non-profit organization seeking clean water for rural well owners. Its ongoing education and factfinding shows that PFAS is an issue growing in geographical and health implications.
