Learn about the historical processes for making paints from plants, animals, and minerals!
Artist-In-Residence Hannah Charlton will show how pigments were traditionally harvested from raw materials, and how these pigments were blended to make paints, glazes, and inks. This presentation will include demonstrations of techniques, tips for how to make your own paints, and at least one baking soda volcano.
About Hannah: Hannah Charlton is an Artist-In-Residence at the Hive® working on a 49-piece series based on the 15th century "The Book of the City of Ladies" by Christine de Pizan. She creates medieval-style illuminated manuscripts using gouache, gold, and ink on vegan parchment. "My work challenges our ideas about the Middle Ages, showing a time of stunning beauty and social change."
