History buff and writer Steven Neill will relate the fascinating history and bond between the United States and the apple (Malus pumila or Malus domestica).
He will detail the apple’s journey from Europe to the Eastern Seaboard and across the country to the Pacific Northwest and California. Highlights of the trip include the birth of American Pomology and its rise to pop star status; how drinking “an apple a day” helped the pioneers settle the vast American wilderness; and the birth of the urban legend that Prohibition killed America’s love for this significant fruit when Americans no longer drank their apples but ate them.
This is a presentation by the Inland Empire Garden Club.
