The sun is our strongest light source. Learn from Artist-In-Residence at the Hive®, Justus Brozek about cyanotypes and ways to alter them with tannins.
Artist-In-Residence Justus Brozek is primarily a printmaker, carving woodblocks and linoleum blocks and also loves experimenting with non-traditional printmaking. Cyanotypes originated in 1842 and have been in use ever since. Using a photosensitive solution, surfaces can be treated and then exposed to the sun to create images. This process creates the dark blue color we typically associate with architectural diagrams known as blueprints. Traditionally these colors were seen as inappropriate for fine arts photography so in order to create images more suitable to artistic sensibilities toning was developed. Using bleaching agents and tannins, found in tea, coffee, wine, and juices you can create prints with a variety of earth tones.
