A Writing Workshop with Ben Van Voorhis

Award-winning writer Ben Van Voorhis teaches the craft of writing a novel in this generative six-week writing workshop.

Bring your novel to life with PEN/Dau Short Story Prize winner Ben Van Voorhis in this six-week workshop that will help you take your idea from first sentence to last. 

This is a six-week workshop. Please plan to attend all sessions! The dates are as follows: Nov 1, Nov 8, Nov 15, Nov 29, Dec 6, Dec 13. (Please note there is a one-week break just before Thanksgiving.)

Each session is devoted to a different phase of writing a novel, beginning with idea generation and ending with revision, and includes dedicated writing time within each session. There will be writing prompts, time for sharing work aloud, and supplemental reading (optional) related to each topic of discussion.

About the presenter: Ben Van Voorhis is a writer and editor from Santa Clarita, California. He holds an MFA in fiction from Eastern Washington University and was the managing editor of Willow Springs. A recipient of the PEN/Dau short story prize, his fiction and other writing have appeared in Meridian, Nimrod, Baltimore Review, Salamander, The Masters Review, and Best Debut Short Stories 2024, among other publications. He is the managing editor of ArcNews, a magazine for users of geospatial technology. He now lives in Spokane where he facilitates community writing programs.
