Carla Crujido, author of the newly published THE STRANGE BEAUTIFUL, will present a writing workshop for the 7th Annual Spokane Writers Conference.
In the 1960s, television introduced viewers to shows set in an everyday world spiked with magic and elements of the fantastic—think Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Twilight Zone. This juxtaposition created an addictive tension that kept viewers coming back for more. In this workshop, we discuss how to infuse the uncanny into the everyday so that our stories entice readers in the same way. To practice, we try two writing exercises to help you open the door to a magical new tale and step inside of it.
About the presenter: Carla Crujido is the nonfiction editor at River Styx Magazine. She holds an MFA in creative writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts and has had work published in Crazyhorse, Yellow Medicine Review, Ricepaper Magazine, Tinfish Press, The Ana, and elsewhere. Her short story collection, The Strange Beautiful, is forthcoming from Chin Music Press in the fall of 2023. She lives in the Pacific Northwest.
