The Hive® Artist-In-Residence Heather Metrokin Cannon will showcase Sugpiat art and design and demonstrate fish skin processsing.
Sugpiaq culture is rich in art and design. Sugpiaq people have inhabited the coastal environments of south-central Alaska, including Kodiak and Afognak Islands since time immemorial. Come explore Sugpiaq art and design with Sugpiaq artist Heather Metrokin Cannon. Heather creates usable art pieces out of natural materials while incorporating ancestral designs. One of the natural materials used in her pieces is fish leather. After learning about design, stay and watch a fish skin processing demonstration.
