Learn the beautiful and meditative art of Suminagashi, a paper marbling technique from Japan. Participants will learn tips and techniques to create beautiful patterns that can be replicated at home.
Suminagashi is a centuries-old paper marbling technique from Japan. Sumi ink and heavily diluted soap water are alternatively applied to the surface of a water bath using brushes to create contrasting light and dark rings. These rings can be manipulated to create whimsical and striking patterns that are then transferred to a piece of paper. Like many things in Japan, Suminagashi is a holistic art form. Movements and breathing play a key role in how the inks will interact and look when transferred. Participants will be creating their own Suminagashi pieces and come away with the knowledge of how to create this work on their own at home.
